Nabha which is a fast developing town lies in Patiala and is a quite town nurturing its history, the cultural heritage and the rich traditions of the Phulkian dynasty. The town is Nabha is one of the Taluks in the Patiala district and also is a Municipal Council. Out of the five Taluks of Patiala, Nabha is at the western edge of the district, sharing its boundaries with Sangrur in the west and Fatehpur Sahib in the north. History of Nabha

The town of Nabha in Punjab boasts of quite a glorious past and basks in the glory of the bygone era. Although a comparatively small town today, Nabha earlier was the capital of the Nabha Estate during the British Raj in India. Its territories were incongruous, yet had expanded until and interspersed with the territories of Patiala and Jind. The rulers of Nabha, along with those of Patiala and Jind could trace their ancestry back to a certain Chaudhary Phul. There is a belief among the historians that the word “Phulkian” seems to have been derived from this this common founder of this royal dynasty.

Chaudhary Ram Singh, a son of Chaudhary Phul was blessed by none other than the great Guru Gobind Singh. It is said that it is only with the support of the Raja of Patiala that the British were able to defeat the warrior king Ranjit Singh, who had wreaked havoc in the British armies. Punjabi is the main language of Nabha, however, because of its past and people from various cultures and region living together in the region, Urdu and English are also spoken here. It is no wonder then that words from Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu can be found in usage of the local tongue that the people of Nabha speak.

Greography of Nabha

Nabha in Patiala district is known for its lush green fields and channels of water beckoning the tourists. It is located at 30.37°N 76.15°E and has an average elevation of 246 metres (807 feet). On its West lies district of Sangrur, on the North is Fatehpur Sahib and on the east Patiala Taluk. The Patiala district forms a part of the Indo-Gangetic Plains and Nabha also is located on the plains, with sporadic hills scattered across the region.

The highest temperatures are recorded in the months of May when the days can be as hot as 43.1°C and the lowest temperatures are recorded in the month of January when the mercury plummets to about 2.1°C.

Administratively, Nabha comes under Patiala district. In its administrative purview come 175 villages with the Sub-Tehsil of Bhadson. Nabha has its own Municipal Council which governs over 23 wards for which elections for people's representatives are held every 5 years. Nabha Municipal Council has over 13,690 houses for which it provides basic amenities like water and sewerage. It holds the authority to impose and collect taxes from its citizens. At the district level, the Deputy Commissioner is the head, and is the appointed representative of the state government. The Deputy Commissioner also performs the duties of the District Collector and District Magistrate.

Population of Nabha

As per the data released by the 2011 Census, the population of Nabha Municipal Council at 67,972 of which 36,528 are male and 31,444 are female residents. In the Nabha Municipal Council, the female sex ratio is a quite lower at 861 against the state average of 895. Moreover, the child sex ratio stands even lower at 816 compared to the Punjab state average of 846. The total child population (age 0 – 6) of Nabha Municipal Council is 6674, about 9.82% of total population. The population belonging to the Scheduled Castes is about 10,318 which is 15.18% of the total population. Nabha Municipal Council does not have any population of Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Once the residence of the Royal Family of Nabha, the Mahal derives its name from the erstwhile ruler Raja Hira Singh, who was one of the Phulkians of Punjab. The Mahal is part of a fortress and is surrounded by beautiful lush green gardens and orchards. Today the place is known as Hira Mahal Colony and is an ideal place for a picnic with children and the family.

Qila Mubarak

Qila Mubarak is one of the most revered and most visited places in Nabha and has been standing tall for over 300 years. Today, the importance of Quila Mubarak is even greater as it houses several government offices as well as a courthouse. The fort is located right in the middle of the city, making it easy for the visitors and tourists to come here. Built first in 1763 as a mud fortress by Baba Ala Singh and reinforced with baked bricks, it is interesting mix of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture and houses 10 huge courtyards. There are several rooms adjacent to the courtyards and are named prison, treasury, Sheesh Mahal, Topkhana, etc. In a connected structure, knows as Quila Androon built by Baba Ala Singh, there are about 13 royal chambers that display the glory and heritage of the Patiala Dynasty. The fort is decorated with exquisite artwork, frescos and mirrors. The best time to visit this place is in the morning, when the hustle and bustle of the city is not yet intrusive. The months of winter are the best time to visit this historic monument.

Hira Singh Park

Visitors to the city can also take a leisurely stroll in the Hira Singh Park, as it is a perfect place for evening picnics and children are sure to enjoy the tranquillity it offers. The park draws a large number of visitors every year. In this beautiful park stands the statue of Raja Hira Singh of Nabha.
